As we approach the end of another year, it's a wonderful time to reflect on the journey of Waters and Stanton, a company that has proudly served the ham radio community for over five decades. Founded in 1973, it all began in a small lockup shop in Hockley. Back then, we could hardly have imagined how far we would come. The evolution of our business has been remarkable, and this post aims to encapsulate some of that journey while sharing insights from the past year and a glimpse into the future.
From Humble Beginnings to a Global Presence
Waters and Stanton has experienced significant changes since its inception. For nearly 47 years, we operated from Hockley, establishing ourselves as a go-to destination for ham radio enthusiasts. However, our journey led us to relocate to Milton Keynes, strategically positioned for easy access via the M1. This move marks a new chapter in our history, allowing us to continue serving our customers effectively.
Celebrating Our Achievements
This year has been particularly exciting for our video channel, which has seen an influx of new subscribers. As we strive to provide valuable content, we appreciate the positive feedback we've received. While not all comments are glowing, the constructive criticism helps us grow and improve. Running this channel has become a passion project, allowing me to share my experiences and knowledge with fellow ham radio enthusiasts.
65 Years in Ham Radio
Reflecting on my personal journey, I am entering my 65th year in ham radio. It’s incredible to think that I received my license back in 1960. This milestone is a reminder of the countless experiences and advancements I’ve witnessed in the hobby over the decades. The evolution of technology and communication methods has been extraordinary, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.
Exploring Propagation Phenomena
This year, I delved deeper into the fascinating world of HF propagation. One of the intriguing aspects I've learned is the unpredictability of propagation conditions. Recently, I had a curious experience while working with Brian, ZL3XDJ, in New Zealand. Our regular communication was enhanced by a phenomenon known as greyline propagation, which occurs when it’s dusk at one end and dawn at the other.
During one of our sessions, I noticed a noticeable echo on the CW signal. This echo, albeit slight, was intriguing and prompted me to record the session. While the recording may not fully capture the experience, it was evident that both Brian and I were hearing this echo. It raised questions about whether it was backscatter, delayed echo, or a combination of long and short paths. Such experiences underscore the unpredictable nature of radio communication and the excitement it brings to our hobby.
The Joy of Antenna Experimentation
One of the aspects of ham radio that continues to excite me is antenna experimentation. Unlike equipment modifications that are often limited by modern technology, antennas provide an avenue for creativity and hands-on tinkering. With just some wire, a pair of wire cutters, and a few insulators, anyone can build and test their own antennas. This aspect of the hobby is both accessible and rewarding, allowing operators to enhance their communication capabilities without breaking the bank.
Looking Forward to 2025
As we prepare for the new year, I want to share some exciting news about our latest offerings. We have received the new Icom flagship radio, which is generating buzz among serious home radio operators. While I haven’t had the chance to use it yet, the features and design have garnered positive attention.
