Used Equipment and Part Exchange Services
One of the most significant developments this month is our enhanced service for used equipment and part exchanges. If you have an item you wish to trade in, simply give us a call. We will provide you with a price based on the condition of your equipment, whether you have the original packaging, and if it includes the handbook. It's a straightforward process. Once you agree on the price, just provide your credit card details to pay for your new item.
We will arrange to collect your used equipment, so ensure it’s packed securely. If everything checks out, we’ll process a refund for the value of your traded equipment back to your card. This means you can receive your new purchase in about 24 hours while saving some money through the part exchange. For those on the lookout for second-hand gear, our website has a steady flow of used equipment being listed, so check back frequently for great deals!
Propagation Updates and International Contacts
This month, I’ve been enjoying regular contacts with Brian, ZL3XDJ, in New Zealand. The propagation conditions have been fantastic, especially during the morning hours when we experience what is known as "cordal hop". This phenomenon allows signals to travel long paths, often resulting in strong signals reaching the UK.
The best time to catch these signals is during the gray zone, which occurs when it’s getting dark in New Zealand and light in the UK. Brian has been using an FT710 HF transceiver, and with just 100 watts and a ground plane antenna elevated about two meters, his signal strength regularly reaches S8 to S9, and sometimes even S9 plus! It’s a great reminder of how effective HF communications can be during these unique propagation conditions.
Engaging with the Community: Stockport Radio Society
About two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of giving a talk to the Stockport Radio Society via WebEx. It was a fantastic experience, and I received positive feedback from the attendees. Radio clubs like Stockport are incredibly active and serve as the backbone of our community. They even have their own YouTube channel, which I encourage you to check out. If you’re considering joining a club, don’t hesitate! You can participate as an associate member and engage with fellow hams over the air or through online meetings.
Membership Updates from the RSGB
This month, the RSGB has announced an increase in the membership fee by £6. This translates to an additional 50p per month. However, you can opt for a digital-only version of their publication, RadCom, to save on postage costs. By choosing the digital format, the RSGB can save significantly on production costs, which is a win-win for everyone involved!
New Equipment Releases
In terms of new gear, there are several exciting releases to look forward to this month. First up is the Alinco DJ-X100, a scanning receiver covering 30 MHz to 470 MHz. It supports various analog modes and even decodes DMR and YSF signals, making it a versatile option for both ham radio enthusiasts and airband listeners. Unfortunately, the first shipment sold out quickly, but we expect more stock in the coming weeks.
Next, we have the Yaesu FTM-510, which is an exciting new model based on the highly successful FTM-500. This transceiver includes a 'Super DX' feature that enhances the front-end gain of the RF amplifier, making weak signals more readable. It also features improved signal processing, which helps reduce noise, particularly in FM mode. This model will be available in March, so keep an eye out for it!
Additionally, Icom has announced the IC-2730B, a black screen version of the popular transceiver. It offers dual-band receive capabilities and a sleek new look. It maintains the same excellent performance as its predecessor but adds a stylish touch with its black background and white lettering.

Our main distribution center in Milton Keynes has been continuously updated, with more equipment available in our showroom. If you’re in the area, we invite you to come down and see the gear in person. For those further afield, remember that we ship worldwide. Just recently, we sent a radio to Brian in New Zealand, and it reached him in just six days – a testament to our efficient service!
