It is that time of year again. Yaesu have announced their Holiday Cashback for 2025, running from 6 November through to 31 December. If you have been thinking about upgrading or adding a new rig to the shack, this is a great window to save some money. Below I will run through the main models covered, how the cashback works, other money saving options we are offering, and a few useful bits of kit and tips for the winter months.
Yaesu Holiday Cashback, what you need to know

How the cashback works:
- Buy the radio at our normal discounted shop price.
- Send a copy of your receipt along with the serial number to Yaesu UK.
- Yaesu will then send you the cashback, typically either £85 or £45 depending on the model purchased.
- Expect to wait around one to two months for the cashback to arrive. This waiting period allows for any possible returns so Yaesu can be sure the radio will be kept.
It is quite a good deal.
Part exchange and fast upgrade options
If you have an older rig to trade in, part exchange makes the overall deal even more attractive. Here is how it works:
- Contact us by phone or email and tell us about the radio you wish to trade in. Key details we need include whether it has the handbook and original box, whether it is fully working, and whether there is any damage.
- We will quote what we are prepared to pay, either for you to send the radio or for us to collect it.
- If you prefer the fastest route, pay the full price for the new radio up front, we will collect your old rig, and within 2 or 3 days we will issue a refund to your card for the agreed part exchange amount. Often you will get that refund before the card payment has cleared, so you effectively pay the net price immediately.
- Even when using part exchange you still qualify for the Yaesu cashback.
This offer runs until the end of December, so you have time to plan, but if you were already thinking about a new rig then now is a good time to act.
Bundle deals and extra discounts

SDR play as a general coverage receiver
If you do not have a general coverage receiver, one of the easiest and most versatile options is the SDR play range. They work with Windows, Linux, Mac and Raspberry Pi and make an excellent monitor receiver for the whole radio spectrum. A monitor receiver lets you listen to other signals, check band conditions and see what is happening on parts of the spectrum your transceiver might not cover.
SDR play have updated their software so you can now integrate your transceiver with the SDR screen. You can either control your transceiver from the SDR play display, or use your transceiver to control the SDR play tuning and modes. In practice this means your SDR receiver can track your transceiver or vice versa, which is very handy for monitoring and contesting.
Combatting noise with ferrite clamp-on cores
Noise problems are common, and a simple, low cost fix is often a ferrite clamp-on core used as a line isolator. We now stock a range of clamp-on ferrite cores in three diameters, small, medium and large, to suit coax, DC leads and thinner cables such as RG58.
Practical advice:
- Place a clamp-on ferrite at the point the coax or DC lead first enters the shack, where it connects to the transceiver or VSWR meter.
- Clamp the DC lead as well. Any line running to the transceiver can carry unwanted RF and cause noise or feedback.
- If you still suffer RF feedback, try clamping other cables into the shack. Often a few well-placed ferrite clamps make a big difference.
Thinking about 60 metres
The 60 metre band, around 5 MHz, is an interesting and often overlooked band. My friend Brian, ZL3XDJ, has been having great success working into Europe, including the UK, running only 15 watts from New Zealand. He uses a simple vertical in his garden, helically wound so it is roughly the size of a 40 metre vertical rather than a full size 60 metre antenna.
If you have access to the 60 m band it is well worth experimenting. Low power operation can be very rewarding and it is surprising what a small vertical can achieve with the right conditions.
